![]() ![]() One way would be for them to be gifts like in Yellow, possibly after completing an errand or side quest. Of course, a player's starter Pokémon is a special choice, so there should be some requirement to meet in order to catch another starter. While this does help the starters feel more rare and special, a lot of players would appreciate a chance to catch extra starter Pokémon, or even starters from previous generations. Even years later, the ability to catch any starters at all, even those from other regions, is exceedingly rare in Pokémon games. The player in Yellow doesn't even have to rely on searching through tall grass for the starters, because each of them will be available as gifts within the first half of the game. Considering how cute Scarlet and Violet's starters are, players of the new game would likely appreciate the same opportunity. The player may get Pikachu as their only option at the start of the game, but they get the chance to collect the other three starters along the way. If the player lost the first fight at the lab, the rival gets a Vaporeon. Since Eevee had three possible evolutions in Gen 1, the game determined which one the rival would get depending on the player's performances in rival battles. However, Yellow added a twist to the formula. After all, they will always choose the starter Pokémon that is strong against the player's, and there is the recurring rumor that the rival's Raticate was killed in Red and Blue. One could say that the player always has impact on the rival's party. This likely caught many off guard the first time they realized, but it may be a good idea for Scarlet and Violet. However, it bears mention that unlike other games, the rival's party was different depending on the player's actions. One quirk of Pokémon Yellow is rather well-hidden, to the point that many players may not know about it. It's a simple mechanic that is loved by a lot of players, so few would likely complain if Scarlet and Violet let the player's Pokémon follow them again. Diamond and Pearl's Amity Square let the player walk with certain Pokémon to find items and raise friendship, and HeartGold and SoulSilver let the player's lead Pokémon follow them everywhere. Pokémon has actually experimented with using this mechanic again in previous games. It would also be tired when low on HP, sick when poisoned, and other such moments. Pikachu would be standoffish at first, similar to how Pikachu disliked Ash in the first episode. This was also the first implementation of any sort of friendship system, as the player could talk to Pikachu in order to see how they were feeling. From the moment that the player gets Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow, it will follow them everywhere in the overworld. ![]()
